What to expect at your first appointment
Prior to initial consultation
A client intake form will be in an appointment confirmation email and also a reminder email. Please submit it prior to your appointment.
Other option:
If you would prefer to complete the client intake form at the time of your appointment, please arrive at my practice a few minutes early prior to your appointment time.
What to wear
My bodywork is carried out over clothes surfaces. I might ask you to take off a work shirt and/or non-stretchy pants as I do stretching for your body. Shorts are provided if you forget to bring them.
Consultation
Please note that I will ask questions about your presenting condition and medical history as part of planning a treatment for you.
Assessment
I will conduct an assessment such as postural analysis, breathing analysis, and other tests to identify possible causes of pain and to tailor a treatment plan for your condition.
Treatment
I will perform treatment based on your medical history, your presenting condition, and the assessment.
This treatment will usually take around 45 minutes for a standard session.
Please note:
1) I balance your body holistically. Therefore, I would touch your body parts away from your pain location that you might not think are relevant to your symptom(s).
2) For low back pain, I will spend more time introducing some self-care program, mainly pelvis stability exercises, than a hands-on treatment.
Self-Care Advice
I will provide feedback based on my assessment of your condition during treatment.
I will also provide self-care advice, which may include breathing advice, simple stretching, and/or exercises, at your first session.
During subsequent consultations, I will review your self-care stretching/exercise technique, and provide corrective feedback if needed.
FAQs
1. What is Seitai?
It literally means to bring the body into order in Japanese. There are hundreds of types of Seitai in Japan. Satomi particularly utilises:
Sotai Ho - Founded by Keizo Hashimoto (1897-1993), a Japanese medical doctor from Sendai. He created Sotai therapy from traditional Eastern medicine with his knowledge of Western medicine. Sotai Ho is based on restoring the structural balance that is claimed to work with the breath and movements toward comfort (or away from pain). Rigaku Sotai - Founded by Hironao Kato, a Japanese physiotherapist and a yoga instructor from Miyagi prefecture. He developed Rigaku Sotai therapy based on his knowledge and experiences as a holistic physiotherapist.
Ken Yamamoto method - Ken Yamamoto, a Japanese osteopath developed his method which improves the symptoms of the body by correcting a body alignment.
2. What is your massage style?
I often get asked this question by new clients. It is Seitai to answer it simply.
It is a gentle and non-invasive movement therapy conducted with me and my client together to re-balance their body alignment. It is followed by an approach to your fascia and muscles which feels like having a massage or shiatsu. People who are used to deep tissue massage and general remedial massage would probably get frustrated by my session as I hardly touch sore/tight spots. Instead, I look at my client's body structure holistically and work on body parts that they might not think it is relevant to their symptom(s). For example, I would touch the legs for soreness in the neck.
3. Why do I have to have a self-care program?
Because I would like you to alleviate your uncomfortable symptom(s) as quickly as possible.
Also exercises* improve a variety of pain effectively based on my own experiences.
* 'Exercises' - You would not feel out of breath. They might be challenging, yet gentle.
4. Which appointment do you recommend, Seitai or Combination?
Seitai might be more suitable for people who can do self-care homework at home. I usually give a couple of easy stretching and/or movement works instead of 3 sets of 10 reps types of exercises.
In a Combination appointment, I introduce some Pilates-based equipment exercises to you as well as some exercises without any equipment that you can do a home.
5. Can you fix my problem in one session?
Unfortunately, no. Of course, I do my best to alleviate your symptom(s) at each session. However, your habits and posture can influence your body alignment. It is important to change them for better and quicker improvement of your symptom(s).
How many sessions you will need depends on your condition and your dedication to follow some self-care advice. Usually, I would recommend new clients for two to three sessions in a short period as the frequency is effective in re-educating their brains about what the ideal posture is and how their bodies are meant to move.
6. Can you mainly massage my neck, shoulders and/or lower back?
I aim to balance your entire body through my bodywork, which means I do not focus solely on your neck, shoulders, and/or lower back as I would like to work on areas of your body that are affecting your symptom(s). Please see other practitioners if you would like a massage just directly on your symptom(s).
7. Should I bring X-rays, scans, or medical reports with me?
Please do. Emailing your scan report(s) to me would be appreciated. info.zenshinwellness@gmail.com
Scans or a copy of reports relating your condition will help me understand how I can treat you.
8. When shouldn't I have a massage?
-
When you are sick, especially when you have a cold.
-
Within a few weeks after a motor vehicle accident. Various symptoms could appear in a few weeks after a car accident even if your body did not hurt just after the crash. Please see a doctor first.
9. What should I do if I need to cancel or reschedule an appointment?
Please notify me by phone, SMS or email at least 24 hours in advance if you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment.
You can also cancel your appointment through a link in your booking confirmation email or reminder email if you have booked online.
10. What if I am late for an appointment?
Please allow enough time to arrive at the practice on time. Unfortunately, I am unable to extend your appointment time if you are late, as it affects clients with the following bookings. Thank you for your understanding.
